Cranberry Coconut Lime Christmas Margarita Recipe

There are few things I enjoy more than a cozy Christmas cocktail, especially one that looks as festive as it tastes. This Christmas margarita blends bright cranberry, creamy coconut, and zesty lime into a drink that feels like holiday cheer with a tropical twist. I started making this cranberry margarita with a friend a few years ago and it quickly became our unofficial holiday tradition. During the season, while decorating the tree or prepping for gatherings, there’s often one of these in hand. Tart cranberry, smooth coconut milk, and a touch of lime make a balanced, festive cocktail that’s both tropical and distinctly seasonal.

The best part is how simple it is to make. You don’t need special glassware or a professional cocktail shaker — a mason jar, pitcher, or any container with a tight lid works just fine. A few straightforward ingredients, a good shake, and a lime wedge for garnish are all you need.

A Christmas Cocktail with a Twist

I love a classic margarita—tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur—but during the holidays I like to add a little sparkle. This Christmas margarita keeps the familiar base and introduces creamy coconut milk and tart cranberry for a well-rounded flavor profile. Coconut milk, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice combine to create a drink that’s sweet, tangy, and smooth.

Think of it as a white-Christmas-style margarita with a rosy hue and extra personality: cranberry cocktail meets coconut margarita with a festive flair. It’s an ideal holiday margarita that’s effortless and crowd-friendly—no blender or complicated steps required.

The Ingredients (and Why They Work)

This cranberry margarita is all about balance. Each component contributes to a harmonious result:

  • Cranberry juice — Provides tartness and festive color. Use pure cranberry juice for a pronounced tartness or cranberry cocktail for a sweeter profile.
  • Coconut milk — Adds richness and smoothness, softening the acidity. Use canned coconut milk (original) rather than sweetened cream of coconut unless you prefer a much sweeter drink.
  • Lime juice — Freshly squeezed lime brightens and balances the flavors; avoid bottled lime juice for best results.
  • Tequila — Blanco or silver tequila works well here for a clean, crisp base.
  • Orange liqueur — Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier brings citrus depth essential to a margarita.
  • Coconut extract — Optional, but a couple of drops amplify the coconut note without overwhelming the other flavors.

For garnish, fresh cranberries, a lime slice, and a sprig of rosemary make the drink look and smell like the holidays.

Tips & Tricks for a Perfect Christmas Margarita

1. You Don’t Need Fancy Tools

No cocktail shaker? No problem. Use a mason jar, pitcher, or any sturdy container with a tight lid. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds to chill and slightly aerate the drink.

2. Sugar Rim for a Festive Touch

Swap salt for sugar to give the rim a sparkling finish that subtly offsets cranberry and lime tartness.

3. Make a Batch for a Crowd

Scale the recipe in a large pitcher for parties. Keep everything chilled and stir or shake with ice before serving so each pour is cold and refreshing.

4. Add a Coconut or Pomegranate Twist

Try swapping tequila for coconut rum for a sweeter, more tropical variation, or add a splash of pomegranate juice for deeper color and flavor.

5. Garnish Like You Mean It

Fresh cranberries, a lime wedge, and a rosemary sprig make a simple drink feel festive and special.

Christmas Margarita: Serving & Variations

This cocktail is perfect before dinner or as part of a dessert spread. It pairs nicely with citrusy desserts, chocolate, and creamy treats. For gatherings, set up a small station with garnishes and extra lime wedges so guests can personalize their drinks.

To make a non-alcoholic version, omit tequila and orange liqueur, increase cranberry juice and coconut milk, and top with soda water. You’ll keep the creamy-tart profile in a family-friendly format.
