Coffee Talk 15: a chance to catch up on the little things in life—both sweet and salty! July 2019

Hi there! Happy July. This month has been busy and full of new things. How is your summer going — any trips, projects, or quiet days planned? I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to.
Pour yourself a cold glass of lemonade and settle in. It’s time for our monthly catch-up: a few updates, some favorites, and a little baking daydreaming. Please leave a comment below and tell me what you’re looking forward to this month.

July birthdays: Warm birthday wishes to my sister Jenny and her little one, Dylan! Two of my favorite people celebrate this month, so we’re sending big hugs and all the best wishes. Here’s to many happy years ahead.

We’re moving to Minneapolis! Life is getting hectic as Erik and I prepare for a long move. We’re heading to Minneapolis to look for apartments, explore the food scene, and get a feel for the area before we relocate. It’s exciting and a little nerve-wracking all at once.
This move is about 1,400 miles — shorter than one of our previous moves from San Diego to Bangor, Maine, which was over 3,200 miles. That time we downsized drastically and traveled with only a few suitcases. This go-round we’re trying to bring as much furniture as will fit in our U-Haul U-Boxes.

Packing tips and mover recommendations? We debated hiring full-service movers, but quotes were extremely expensive — one came in at around $15,000. We’re weighing options like renting U-Boxes or PODS vs. driving ourselves. Have you used PODS or U-Haul U-Boxes? What worked well, and what didn’t?
During moves we do the usual dance: decide what to keep, schedule donations, secretly stash items the other person forgot about, then negotiate custody of sentimental things with family. I’m curious how you approach moving: do you inventory belongings, make pros and cons lists, or use vacuum bags to save space?
For now, cost pushed us toward U-Haul U-Boxes, but I’d love to hear real experiences with both services. Any packing shortcuts or must-haves to recommend?
