In my twenties I used to joke that weddings came in waves. Some years I only had one or two to attend, and other years I’d have eight in a row. That was on top of the dozens I sang at as a wedding singer, covering every memorable — and awkward — song you can imagine.
Now in my thirties I’ve noticed that babies arrive in waves too. I currently have six close friends who are pregnant and several with newborns. This season means lots of baby showers and gift-giving. Fortunately my friends tend to host relaxed, thoughtful gatherings — cocktail showers, unwrapped gift parties, or casual afternoons in yoga clothes — so I actually look forward to attending them.
Over time I’ve realized one of the most helpful gifts I can offer new parents isn’t a gadget but practical cooking ideas. At a recent book club, a new mom named Natalie confided that getting fresh, healthy meals on the table felt nearly impossible. I can’t pretend to offer parenting expertise, but I do know how to cook. That conversation sent my brain into recipe mode, and I started listing quick, nourishing meals she could make during those early weeks.
That inspired me to assemble a small recipe book as a baby shower gift. The first recipe I included is one of my go-to quick, comforting, and surprisingly nutritious options: a Chocolate Peanut Butter Green Smoothie. It’s versatile enough for breakfast, a snack, or even a dessert, and it’s simple to prepare when time is short.

Green smoothies are hard to beat when you want something quick, fresh, and healthy. This version pairs spinach with peanut butter and cocoa for a treat-like flavor that still delivers nutrients. It’s naturally sweetened with honey (if needed) and offers protein and healthy fats to help power long days and nights — perfect for new parents or anyone who needs a convenient boost.

To make it, combine the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. The frozen banana and ice give it a creamy texture, while the spinach blends in without altering the chocolate-peanut butter flavor. If you want a little extra decadence, top with mini chocolate chips or cacao nibs.

I shared the full recipe and the story behind this gift idea on Hallmark’s Think.Make.Share blog, where I also wrote about creating a small recipe book for my friend and about how my mom inspired this kind of thoughtful giving. I used to do some food styling at Hallmark’s Kansas City offices and learned a lot from the creative people there about taking time to show others how much they mean to you.

Below is the recipe card I included in the recipe book. It makes two servings, takes about five minutes, and requires only a blender and simple pantry ingredients. It’s an easy, nourishing pick-me-up that feels indulgent while giving you real fuel.
