If you’ve ever lived in or traveled through Germany, you probably miss the food. I certainly do, which is why I make so many German desserts at home.
Still, there are authentic German items that are hard to recreate from scratch or simply unavailable locally.
Since returning to the US I’ve searched for my favorite sweet and savory German foods. I don’t have a dedicated German shop nearby, but I’ve found some treats at Trader Joe’s (cherries), Aldi (seasonal cookies), and fresh Brötchen and pastries at our local German bakery.

There are still many items I can’t find locally, so I turn to Amazon. It’s like having a German grocery store at my fingertips. Amazon is a convenient place to find German groceries and specialty products online.
My husband and I order so much online these days that it’s easy to add German staples we miss. I was surprised by the variety available: bread, salad dressings, candy, chocolate, paprika potato chips, and more. You can even buy fresh pretzels or pretzel mix, regional cheeses, and different types of sausage.
To make it easier to shop, I put together a list of German foods available online. I also created a few themed gift basket ideas—what could be more fun than receiving a basket of favorite German foods for a birthday, anniversary, or holiday?
Guten Appetit!
