Air fryer banana split is a simple, crowd-pleasing dessert. A banana caramelizes in the air fryer, then gets dressed up with ice cream, whipped cream, and your favorite toppings for a fast, satisfying treat.

Bananas are available year-round, which makes this dessert easy to enjoy anytime. Caramelizing a banana in the air fryer adds depth and sweetness, and finishing it as a banana split makes it feel special without much effort.
This recipe works for sharing or for a solo indulgence. It’s great for kids and parties because everyone can customize their own banana split with preferred toppings.
Ingredients
- 1 banana — preferably yellow and still firm (not overly ripe)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar (light or dark)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon butter
- Oil for the air fryer basket or air fryer parchment (optional)
- Optional toppings: ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate or caramel syrup, nuts, cherries, fresh berries, etc.
How to make an air fryer banana split
Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and butter in a small bowl. Use a fork or your fingers to work the butter into the sugar and cinnamon until evenly mixed.

Lightly brush or spray the air fryer basket with oil, or line it with air fryer parchment paper.
Peel the banana and slice it lengthwise in half. Place the halves in the air fryer basket cut-side up.

Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture evenly over the cut sides of the banana. Air fry at 400°F (200°C) for about 6 minutes, until the sugar has melted and the banana is caramelized.

Carefully lift the hot banana out of the air fryer with a spatula and transfer to a plate. The banana and sugar will be hot—handle with care.
If the banana splits or breaks while moving it, simply reassemble it on the plate; ice cream and toppings will hide any imperfections.

Top the caramelized banana as desired. A classic combination is vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and chopped pecans, but feel free to mix and match.

Why choose a firmer banana?
A firmer yellow banana holds up better during slicing and removal from the air fryer. Very ripe bananas with brown spots soften considerably during cooking and are more likely to fall apart, making them harder to handle.
Topping ideas
Customize your banana split or keep it classic. A few ideas:
Ice cream – Vanilla is traditional, but mix flavors to suit your taste.
Whipped topping – Use canned whipped cream or make a flavored whipped cream, such as cinnamon or vanilla.
Syrup – Chocolate sauce, caramel, or dulce de leche add extra sweetness and texture.
Nuts – Chopped pecans, sliced almonds, pistachios, or peanuts provide crunch.
Fruit – Maraschino cherries are classic; fresh raspberries, blueberries, or sliced strawberries are tasty alternatives.
Recipe notes
- Use a yellow, firmer banana rather than a very ripe spotted banana for easier handling and better texture after air frying.
- Be careful removing the banana from the air fryer; if it breaks, rearrange the pieces on the plate and continue with toppings.
