Smoked Sweet Potato Casserole puts a smoky twist on a classic Thanksgiving side. After making this on the smoker, I’m not sure I’ll prepare it any other way. While it’s a holiday favorite, this casserole works year-round as a comforting side for any meal.

Sweet potatoes are a family favorite, so we enjoy this casserole beyond the holidays. I made this version on a Pitboss Pro 1100 and plan to serve it for Thanksgiving alongside smoked green bean casserole.

How To Smoke Sweet Potatoes:
Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly to remove dirt.
Dry them and pierce each potato with a skewer or knife so they don’t burst while smoking.
Prepare and clean your smoker so it’s ready.
Set the smoker to 350°F and place the sweet potatoes inside.
Place smaller potatoes where the smoker runs a bit cooler and larger potatoes where it runs hotter for more even cooking.

How Long To Smoke Sweet Potatoes:
Smoking sweet potatoes is straightforward.
Smoke them for about 35 minutes.
Check for doneness by squeezing gently with tongs or testing with a fork; they should be soft and fork-tender.
Remove the potatoes from the smoker. If you plan to bake the casserole in the smoker, keep the smoker set and ready.
How To Make Sweet Potato Casserole:
You can finish the casserole in the oven or bake it in the smoker; using smoked sweet potatoes adds a subtle smoky flavor either way.

Slice the smoked sweet potatoes and remove the skins. Use oven gloves if they’re still hot or let them cool slightly before handling.
If you didn’t smoke the potatoes, boil them until tender before mashing.
Place the peeled potatoes in a large mixing bowl and add 1/4 cup butter, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, white sugar, and heavy cream.
Mix with an electric mixer, hand mixer, or potato masher until smooth and creamy.

Grease a 9×13 pan or casserole dish with cooking spray. If you bake the casserole in the smoker, the dish may pick up smoke stains—consider using disposable aluminum pans if you want to avoid that.
Transfer the sweet potato mixture to the prepared baking dish.
In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup butter (room temperature), flour, brown sugar, and chopped pecans. Mix with a spatula until the topping resembles coarse crumbs.
Room temperature butter works well for the pecan streusel; a food processor can be used, but mixing by hand gives a lovely texture.

Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the sweet potato filling for a crunchy streusel-like finish.

Bake or smoke the casserole at 350°F for about 30 minutes, until the topping turns golden brown.

Serve and enjoy! This pairs wonderfully with smoked ham and other holiday mains.

Smoking side dishes frees up oven space and adds comforting flavor. What do you enjoy smoking for holiday meals?
