When Plans Fall Through: What to Do When Things Go Wrong

I had a delightful post planned—cookies, cupcakes and a bit of holiday cheer—but I can’t publish it yet. My camera appears to be broken. Completely dead. Unresponsive. And the photos I wanted to share are stuck on it. To be precise, the images are on the compact flash card, not the camera’s internal memory, which at least gives me some hope. Still, this whole situation has convinced me why people use card readers. I used to think they were optional since most cameras include a cable to connect to a computer. Not anymore.

So, tomorrow’s first task: buy a card reader. And possibly… I can hardly bring myself to say it… a new camera. I’m hoping it’s only a temporary glitch and that the camera will spring back to life by morning. But I dropped it earlier today, so the outlook doesn’t feel great. I just wish I had noticed the problem sooner. Ugh.

There is a lesson here: kerplunk and cameras do not mix. Treat your gear gently, and keep backups.

While I sort this out, please enjoy this stop-motion cupcake video I made for Cakespy some time ago. It still makes me smile, and I hope it brings a little cheer to your day as well.

If you’re reading this and you’re in a similar predicament, here are a few quick tips based on what I’ve learned the hard way:

  • Always carry a card reader or an adapter that matches your camera’s card type. They’re inexpensive and save a lot of frustration.
  • Back up photos regularly. Keep copies in cloud storage or on a separate drive so a single hardware failure won’t cost you memories.
  • Handle cameras with care. Even short drops can cause unpredictable issues.
  • Test your gear before an important shoot or before posting content—make sure everything powers on and connects as expected.

Between holiday baking and photographing seasonal treats, it’s easy to take gear for granted. The cupcakes, cookies, and the festive shots I’d been excited to share will happen—I’m simply pausing to sort out the technical side. In the meantime, I’ll be shopping for a card reader and weighing camera repair versus replacement. If the card is fine, recovering the photos should be straightforward once I have the right adapter.

Thanks for your patience and for sticking around. Baking and photographing holiday treats is a joy, and I can’t wait to share the pictures once everything is back in working order. For now, enjoy the little stop-motion cupcake clip and a reminder to protect your photos: backups and gentle handling go a long way.
