As any devoted southern lady might imagine, I cherish the idea of wearing large hats, pearls, and enjoying elegant luncheons filled with beloved southern recipes handed down through generations. I may not single-handedly revive the hat trend, but every year when the Kentucky Derby arrives, Derby Day at The Dixie lets me live out those big-hat dreams.

Derby Day at The Dixie, held at the Dixie Carter Performing Arts and Academic Enrichment Center in Huntingdon, Tennessee, is a community event that captures the full splendor of a classic derby celebration. The annual gathering is free to the public and welcomes guests with warm southern hospitality. Tailgates brim with traditional derby fare, inviting visitors to sample favorites that evoke the best of southern cooking.

The event offers plenty of ways to join the fun: pick a winning thoroughbred, bid in a silent auction, enjoy live bluegrass music, and watch the race shown on the theater’s big screen. The viewing turns even the quietest guest into an enthusiastic cheerleader before the home stretch.

Of course, the real highlight is the attire. Derby fashion — the striking hats, seersucker suits, and pastel dresses — often steals the show. Attendees come dressed to impress, and awards are presented for best female derby hat, best men’s attire, best tailgate, best derby pie, and other standout categories that celebrate creativity and southern style.

Although I hope to visit Churchill Downs one day, I’m in no hurry. For now, my southern heart — and my favorite big hat — belong to Derby Day at The Dixie.
Here’s a glimpse inside the festivities:
